Team collaboration

My work process

Each project is unique, and I believe in adapting my approach to fit its specific needs. While my core focus remains on understanding user needs and embedding accessibility, I’m flexible in aligning with different internal methodologies and tools to achieve the best results.

Accessibility at every stage of the process

Since I started reading Shawn Lawton Henry's book, collaborator at W3C WAI, Just Ask: Integrating Accessibility Throughout Design, I’ve become a strong advocate of the Human-Centred Design approach she champions. Although this book was published in 2008, its teachings are timeless. This approach resonates deeply with me, and I’m committed to integrating it into my work process to ensure that accessibility is prioritised at every stage of design.

Human-centered design

  • Analysis

I start by getting a clear understanding of the project’s vision, goals, and user needs to guide accessibility strategies. This phase includes a detailed look at the diversity of users, especially those with disabilities, to ensure we create an inclusive experience. I also help map out the tasks users need to complete and support structuring content in a way that makes sense for everyone. Setting clear usability goals is important, particularly for key tasks or frequently used features that may need extra adjustments for accessibility. Using research methods like interviews, field studies, and focus groups, I gather insights to keep the design user-centred and accessible right from the start.

  • Design

In the design phase, I focus on making sure accessibility is built into concepts, navigation, and structures from the beginning. I work with the design team to ensure we look at accessibility from different angles to meet a variety of user needs. I follow key standards and guidelines, supporting the team by reviewingg prototypes at different levels of development to keep the design user-friendly and accessible. I also draw ideas from other accessible products and resources, helping to improve the design with accessibility in mind.

  • Evaluation

I integrate accessibility checks at every stage of the process to make sure the final product is usable and accessible. This involves reviewing standards, running heuristic evaluations, and conducting design walkthroughs to spot and address any accessibility challenges early. I also use screening techniques and testing with diverse participants, including people with disabilities, to gather a range of feedback. My aim is to fully integrate accessibility so that the end result isn’t just compliant but genuinely inclusive and user-friendly for everyone.
